US$3.5
million in technology Grants available for teacher-training facilities
Calgary, AB --- March 22, 2001 --- The SMARTer Kids Foundation announces that US$3.5 million in Grants are available to enhance technology integration in teacher-preparation and training centers. PREP Grants, which cover up to 70% of the list price of qualifying SMART Roomware products, are available to all accredited, non-profit teacher-training centers internationally. Roomware includes interactive whiteboards, multimedia cabinets and computer-lab instruction software. Since the launch of the PREP Grant in 1999, over US$848,000 in Roomware products have been placed in teacher-preparation and training facilities.
The PREP Grant covers 70% of the list price of a SMART Board When asked about the importance of training teachers to use technology, PREP Grant recipient Jerry Smith of Northern Marianas College says, At the School of Education we recognize an urgent need for greater focus on technology training for our pre-service and in-service teachers. Theres real potential for teachers well-trained in technology use and integration to transform the learning process and classroom environment in our public school. Giving teachers the skills to successfully integrate technology into the curriculum is critical to providing a valuable education to our young people, says Nancy Knowlton, executive director of the SMARTer Kids Foundation. The PREP Grant enables teacher-training facilities to purchase leading-edge presentation and teaching tools at a very affordable price to help ensure more of tomorrows teachers can use todays technology effectively.

All applications must be received by midnight on May 1, 2001. Applicants will be notified of their status within 30 days of receipt of their application. Grants must be utilized by September 1, 2001.
