US$40 million in SMARTer Kids Grants for SMART products available for the 2002–2003 school year

All accredited, not-for-profit educational institutions, museums and libraries
in North America eligible for technology funding

Calgary, AB --- December 2, 2002 --- The SMARTer Kids Foundation of Canada announces US$40 million in SMARTer Kids Grants for SMART products for the 2002–2003 school year. Available to approved educational institutions, museums and libraries, these Grants are worth 20 to 70 percent of the suggested list price of SMART Board™ interactive whiteboards, whiteboard cameras, multimedia furniture and software. There is no limit on the number of qualifying products for which the school may apply. More than US$100 million in technology funding is now available for the current school year through the SMARTer Kids Foundation.

“With SMART products in the classroom, teachers have the tools to create interactive learning environments that engage students and inspire them to learn,” says Nancy Knowlton, executive director of the SMARTer Kids Foundation. “The SMARTer Kids Grant programs make integrating collaborative technology products into the classroom an affordable reality.”

“The SMART Board interactive whiteboard is a fantastic teaching tool,” says Robert Barrick, physics teacher at Carlisle Area High School in Cumberland County, PA. “It has revolutionized my teaching.”

How to Apply
Applications are available online at www.smarterkids.org/smartproducts/appform or from the Foundation office at 403.228.8565. Applications must be received by midnight September 30, 2003.

SMART products available for SMARTer Kids Grants include:
SMART Board interactive whiteboards and optional SMART Floor Stands
Rear Projection SMART Board interactive whiteboards
SMART Board for Plasma Displays interactive overlays
Sympodium interactive lecterns and integration modules
Expression multimedia cabinets
LightRaise projector mounts
Camfire whiteboard cameras
SynchronEyes computer-lab instruction software
SMART Ideas concept-mapping software
X-Port multimedia switches

Notable Recipients
The SMARTer Kids Foundation has helped schools across North America purchase technology they might otherwise not be able to afford. Recipients of SMARTer Kids Grants include the Harvard School of Public Health, New York City Public Schools, Master’s Academy & College, Stanford University, Pomona Unified School District, Missouri Research and Education Network (MOREnet), Montgomery Bell Academy, UCLA and Johns Hopkins University.

Other Technology Grants
In addition to SMARTer Kids Grants for SMART Products, the Foundation also offers the following grant programs to educators:

SMARTer Kids Grants for NEC Visual Presentation Products – US$65 million in technology funding for qualifying NEC products is available for the 2002-2003 school year to eligible educational institutions, museums, libraries and science centers in North America
PREP Grants – US$2.4 million in technology funding for SMART products is available to enhance technology integration in qualifying teacher-preparation and training centers.
