A Series of Unfortunate Events
: The Carnivorous Carnival |
| |
By Lemony Snicket
Review by Tyler in Chateauguay, Quebec |
| |
| |
 |
In the Series of Unfortunate Events, there
are three kids that are telling the story of their lives. They are from
a very rich family. The oldest is Violet, the second is Klaus and the
youngest is named Sunny. Their parents were killed in a burning hospital
and now they are on their own. They escaped from an orphanage because
they were afraid a man named Count Olaf would adopt them. Count Olaf is
trying to steal their family fortune by using nasty schemes and dirty
tricks.
Now, in the ninth book of the series The Carnivorous Carnival, the three
of them are hiding from him by using disguises to look like circus freaks.
Violet and Klaus form a two-headed freak named Beverly, and Sunny forms
a freak that is part baby and part wolf named Chabo the Wolf Baby. The
freaks are working in the Calgari Carnival for Madame Lulu, but Count
Olaf continues to search for them.
In order to increase ticket sales at the carnival, Count Olaf buys Madame
Lulu some lions. These lions are to eat the freaks as part of the show.
He thinks this will excite audiences to attend the carnival spectacles.
All he asks in return is for his fortune to be told so that he can find
out where the kids are, and where the Snicket File is. The Snicket File
is the last bit of evidence that proves he murdered the kids’ parents.
I found the story was a lot like Harry Potter and The BFG all in one,
because in Harry Potter there is a lot of adventure, and in The BFG there
is a lot of comedy, thus being the perfect mix. I think this would make
a great movie because of all the gruesome parts. But as the author says,
it is not a book for those who like happy endings. I think that this book
was great! |

Dear Mr. Henshaw |
| |
By Beverly Cleary
Review by Skye from Midway City, California |
| |
| |
 |
I think that Dear Mr. Henshaw is a great
book.
First, it is about a boy named Leigh Botts who lives with his mom, Bonnie.
His mom and dad are divorced and he doesn't get to see his dad very often.
He is very shy and moves to a new school in the book.
Leigh writes a letter to Mr. Henshaw who is an author. He usually writes
to him about how much he likes his writing and sometimes about his problems
too. Mr. Henshaw recommended to Leigh that he keep a journal of his problems.
At the library there is a contest. If you write a story, and your story
is the best, you get to have lunch with an author. Leigh hopes that the
author is Mr. Henshaw.
He doesn't win, but he does get the chance to meet Angelena Badger. Leigh
thought she wasn't that bad. He really got excited when Mrs. Badger called
him an author because he felt so inspired.
In one part of the book Leigh is waiting for his dad's phone call. He
started getting angry and sick of waiting. Then one day the phone rings,
and it's his dad.
You'll have to find out about the rest of the story on your own. I recommend
this book to everyone.
Also reviewed by Eunice D. from Monterrey, Mexico
It’s about a boy named Leigh whose parents are divorced,
which really affects him a lot. He thinks his parent’s divorce is
his fault and has very low self-esteem. Luckily, he knows about an author
who helps him in writing stories as well as a little bit about his life.
His father doesn’t phone and he always promise that he will; Leigh
hates his father calling him a kid because he is not just a kid…he
is his son!
Leigh also doesn’t like kids with runny noses, classmates stealing
his lunches, getting to school on time and finding no one is there, being
lonely and being the new kid school.
This is a great book full of emotions. It will really catch your attention.
Maybe some of you already read it, but this is one of those books you
can read over and over. To find out more I recommend that you to rent
it from the library, buy it, or ask your teacher to read it aloud. You’ll
enjoy it! |

From The Files Of Madison Finn:
Double Dare # 14 |
| |
By Laura Dower
Review by Emma from Calgary, Alberta |
| |
| |
 |
I just finished reading Madison Finn #
14 Double Dare and it was an awesome book! In it, a girl named Madison
Francesca Finn joins a special web page design contest in her computer
class with Mrs. Wing, her teacher. It was a contest that involved all
the schools in Far Hills, New York, where Madison lives. She needed a
partner for this contest and she wanted to partner up with her best friend
Walter Diaz, also known as Egg Diaz, but he was already partnered up with
Chet Waters, which made Madison a bit upset.
Madison soon found another great partner, Fiona Waters, who was Chet's
twin sister. As well Aimee Gillespie, Madison's other best friend, joined
to make it a trio. Fiona and Madison decided to challenge Egg and Chet
on the web page contest!
In the middle of all this, Fiona and Chet`s birthday was coming up and
it was usually just a plain family dinner. But Mrs. Waters wanted Aimee
and Fiona to help her plan a special surprise party at the nearest bowling
location in Far Hills with all of Fiona and Chet's friends. Madison decided
to send out an evite as an invitation, which was an email invite!
One day Madison got into a fight with Walter because she revealed how
she felt about him being Chet's partner for the web page contest. She
also got into a fight with her Dad when he asked what was up and she told
him about Walter. Madison got frustrated because her Dad was treating
her like a little girl. Madison couldn't figure out a way to apologize;
she was way too nervous. She was in a big mess!
But in the end all was well, and she finally apologized to Walter, and
he apologized too because he didn't realize he had hurt her feelings.
She apologized to her Dad too and he said that he would try to treat her
a little bit more like her age. The web page contest was great, but to
find out who won, you’ll have to read the book! |

Hatchet |
| |
By Gary Paulsen
Review by Theresa and Fransota from Richmond Heights, Missouri |
| |
| |
 |
Hatchet is about a 13-year-old boy named
Brian Robeson. He is on his way to visit his father in Canada when the
pilot of the single engine plane has a heart attack. Brian is faced with
the task of landing the plane, or should I say crashing it. He ends up
in the middle of the Canadian wilderness trying to survive. He has nothing
but his clothing, and the hatchet his mother had given him as a present
before he left. The author does an amazing job of making you feel like
you are there and experiencing what Brian is experiencing. It is a great
book about survival and determination. You won’t be able to put
it down.

The Worst Witch |
| |
By Jill Murphy
Review by Lennie from Chicago, Illinois |
| |
| |
 |
The Worst Witch is a fictional book. The
main character is Mildred Hubble. This book is about a girl who goes to
a Witch Academy to learn about witches, spells, and tricks.
My favorite section of the story was when the girls go camping in the
woods and they plan to turn people into frogs. The girls get a big cauldron
and place it over an open fire. They chant spooky spells and drop in handfuls
of bats along with other things. Once the people became frogs they were
suppose to obey every command the girls gave. Mildred casts a spell on
a girl she didn’t like and then the girl decides to get revenge
and casts a spell on Mildred. After awhile the girls realize that what
they were doing is wrong.
This was a good book. I look forward to reading other books by the author
and I recommend this one to you to read./td>

Wild Horses |
| |
By Michael Bright
Review by Shaylyn from Red Deer, Alberta |
| |
| |
 |
I really enjoyed reading this book because
it’s full of wild horse facts like who their ancestors are. Some
of them are the Hyracotherium, Mesohippus, Merychippus, Equus, and Anchiterium.
Horses had feet 54 million years ago and their hooves are actually over
grown toenails.
Horses are related to a rhinoceros-type animal called the tapir. I think
other kids that enjoy horses, would enjoy the book Wild Horses. It gives
a lot of information that would be useful to anyone that may own a horse
or would like to own a horse.
It also has information on how a foal is born, where they live and many
more interesting facts. If you get a chance to read it, and you like horses,
you will enjoy this book. |
