Here I am in Old Town, Albuquerque. This is a
special year to be here. Albuquerque is 299 years old, and the city is already
starting festivities for the tricentennial celebration. Look closely and
you can see me on the wall in front of the San Felipe de Neri church, which
as built in 1706.

Albuquerque, like all cities settled by the Spanish, has
a central plaza. This is the gazebo in the middle of Old Town's plaza. The
kids and I had fun playing in the gazebo!

Here I am in one of the many small courtyards
that branch off from the plaza. This banco is a relaxing place for me
to rest, after all the walking we've done today. Can you see the red chile
ristra in the background? People in New Mexico love to eat red and green
chile. The red chiles are also used for decorations. People string them
together to form a ristra and hang them near doors or from walls.

Here I am back at school, at the end of my last day with the kids at Governor
Bent Elementary. We've had a good day touring Old Town. I'm really glad
the cloudy weather didn't move in until after we got back. The mountains
in the background are called the Sandia Mountains, which means watermelon
in Spanish. They are located east of the city, and when the sun sets upon
them, they look pink and like a watermelon, because of their shape. They
are 10,000 feet tall, and I'm at 5, 000 feet here in this photo. I am sad
to be leaving New Mexico, but am very eager to continue my adventure! |
