On September 8th, 2005 the day Bearnard arrived.
I asked my two kindergarten classes if they thought Bearnard would need
to eat and drink, like a live cat or a dog does. To my surprise, some thought
yes! I knew we had to explore differences between Bearnard and living creatures
in the next several weeks. We began by discussing what live animals needed
to have in order to stay healthy. The students learned that food and drink
are vital for living animals. During Bearnard’s stay at our school,
we arranged to have a veterinarian talk about his work with pets. That experience
helped the students understand more about what animals need in order to
live and be healthy. |

Bearnard helped the students learn more about how to care
for animals in need in September and October of 2005.We explored the Calgary
Humane Society’s website during his stay. On it, we learned that
the Shelter was in need of canned dog food. When I contacted their Humane
Education Coordinator she indicated that several of the animals preferred
this type of food. She explained that many were in very poor health and
stressed upon arrival at the CHS and that this wet food seemed to be palatable
and comforting to them. My two kindergarten classes decided to collect
canned dog food for these abandoned and abused animals.
We graphed the dog food over the month Bearnard was visiting our classroom.
Bearnard helped us give our large box of donated dog food to the Education
Coordinator on the day she gave a presentation about the Shelter to all
the kindergarten students in our school.

During Bearnard’s visit, he shared many books about a variety
of pets and live animals with the students. He also enjoyed many books
about stuffed animals. He particularly liked Corduroy, a book about
a stuffed animal that finds a home.
Bearnard received a book designed for kindergarten students from the
CHS which he has been invited to take to the other schools participating
in the ImagiNations program. My classes hope that our journal entries,
pictures, the book we made about the Calgary umane Society’s work
will inspire other students to become connected with their local animal
rescue organizations. We would love to learn about those in other areas
Bearnard is visiting.

Bearnard helps kindergarten students make rain sticks.
Legend has it that the Chilean Indians invented the rain stick to
make rainy weather. Bearnard helped the students pound nails into sturdy
tubes. Then, he helped students put a handful of gravel into their rain
sticks. Bearnard was pleased that each students rain stick made a wonderful
sound, like falling rain. He joined us on our rain stick parade around
the school. We studied the water cycle and read many books about rain
during Bearnard’s stay.
