Reading and Extending
Read Bear Day (a story about a bear that has a day similar to that
of a child) by Cynthia Rylant. Students have a discussion about typical day
in their lives. They write a story or create a picture book where the ImagiNations
teddy bear follows them through one of their typical days.
Sorting and Grouping
Provide numerous pictures of various modes of transportation. Students sort
the pictures into categories chosen by you (wheels/no wheels, motor/no motor,
etc.). Students then discuss what it was like the first time they used a specific
form of transportation. They write a story or draw a picture about what it would
be like for the ImagiNations teddy bear to ride a bike, take a plane or ride
on a bus for the first time.
Comparing
and Contrasting
Students look through material collected by their ImagiNations teddy bear. If
there is not enough material in the box, supplement this lesson with Children
Just Like Me by Susan Elizabeth Copsey. Students discuss the similarities
and differences between themselves and the children they are reading about.
They make inferences and observations based on the information provided.
