Shimmers began her visit with Mrs. Flaherty's First Grade Class on October 28, 2005.
San Onofre School is a K-8 school located on Camp Pendleton, a United States Marine
Corps Base. Most of our students' fathers, and sometimes mothers, have been in or are in
Iraq. For most, it has been 2-3 tours over there.

While Shimmers visited us we taught her all about California. Here she is with a California
Valley Quail, our state bird. We also shared with her our state mammal, the grizzly bear, our state flag,
some of our state's history and geography. We learned how to draw the California Valley Quail and
how to paint our state flower the golden poppy.

Our school is located on a hill above the coast of the Pacific Ocean. From our classroom
window, we have an ocean view. In January, we are sometimes lucky enough to spot a
California Gray Whale migrating.

Shimmers joined us for our Halloween celebration. We voted to dress Shimmers in USMC dress blues. Urrah!

We used an atlas to draw the route that Shimmers will be traveling as she visits all the schools. We used the compass rose to figure out the direction that she will travel from each school.

Using the book, If You Give a Mouse a Cookie,as a model, we wrote a book called, If You Give Shimmers Some Honey. We worked hard to make sure that it was a circle story and ended where it began.

At a math center, we measured different parts of Shimmers using unifix cubes, popsicle sticks, and paper clips.

On Shimmers' last day with us, we had a good-bye party. We invited our favorite stuffed friends to join us. Good-bye Shimmers! We had a wonderful time with you!
