The teachers recognized by the Teaching Excellence Award program were asked to share some of their favorite Web sites and teaching tools, and what they believe every student should learn. Here's what they had to say Favorite Teaching Tools
"I am sure my new SMART Board interactive whiteboard will receive
this honor; however, right now I'd have to say my favorite teaching tools
are musical instruments, sheet music, a CD player, my computer, and my
baton for conducting." "Literature. I own and share thousands of books." "Magnetic letters!" "My singing and speaking voice. Not that it is the greatest voice,
but I find it to be the most efficient and effective tool that I use constantly
to express my thoughts, desires and ideas to my students. I could never
dream of teaching any music class without having to use my singing voice
throughout it." "Computers and manipulative visual objects for hands on activities."
"My picture file (pictures from magazines and of couse my digital
photos) and poem file. With just these two files, I feel confident that
I could go anywhere and teach any elementary or middle school grade level
and subject with no additional materials." "Paper, pencil, good books and lively discussions." "The computer program, Board Maker, and my book-binding machine.
Board Maker makes it so much easier to create alternative communication
systems for students (which in many cases facilitate their verbal language),
and I love helping the children create books that will help them generalize
skills while facilitating their language. These books become tools that
they carry home to help their parents take what I give them at school
a step further." "Journals they allow us to see into our students' souls." One Lesson Every Student Should
Learn "Mistakes can lead to strength. Never be afraid to try new things.
Accept education as an exciting adventure! Take a risk once in a while!"
"Believe in yourself; believe in your teachers; believe in your
school; believe in your community. You can, and you will succeed. Together
we will all make it happen." "You can do anything if you really want to do it!" "Listen to your teachers and parents because they care and look
out for your success. Follow their guidance and life will be much easier."
"Every student should learn how to find the answers to his questions.
He should be able to and want to use a variety of resources from reference
books to news media to Internet to personal interviews. Students should
be able to evaluate the information they've gathered to develop answers."
"Be self reliant, not afraid to take risks or celebrate successes."
"All students must discover their unique talents and find ways to
use them to benefit others." "That effort and determination are what make individuals succeed
in life. When an individual possesses these two traits they can not help
but discover their strengths as well as strengthen their weaknesses. A
weakness should not be viewed as a failure because in many cases it can
become an individuals' greatest asset." "You are a member of many groups or communities and everyone has
something vital to contribute. Belonging means being needed as well as
needful." "Education is a life-long journey, not one that ends when graduation
does." |
