White House Ceremony

April 24, 2002, Washington, DC

President George W. Bush with Chauncey Veatch

The formal announcement and introduction of the National Teacher of the Year was made during a ceremony held in the White House Rose Garden. Amid onlookers of family, peers, supporters and press, the National Nominees emerged from the Oval Office one by one and were escorted to their seats in the Rose Garden. Proud smiles abounded as the teachers relished this once-in-a-lifetime experience, receiving personal congratulations from President George W. Bush. The tone was joyous and deep admiration and respect for these outstanding professionals were evident as we joined the President in honoring the teachers recognized as those best representing leadership and excellence in their state and country.
