Arthur Coleman, Jr.
California Teacher of the Year
Hamilton Middle School, Stockton, CA
Grades 7-8, concert band, jazz band, drumline, piano, band

My teaching philosophy
A true teacher is much more than a person that covers curriculum. I care about kids and have high expectations. I use an organized approach and always focus on clear goals, which make my program strong. Most kids can learn almost anything. It just depends on your approach and the road you build to get them there. Good teaching is based upon individual growth.

My philosophy in action
All students can and do learn. Solo recitals that are built into my regular curriculum allow me to watch learners closely and build their musical skills with individualized attention. Building skills of each separate student and musician build the strength and skills of each performing group as a whole.

My greatest teaching accomplishment
The Performing Arts Program at Hamilton Middle School is my greatest teaching accomplishment.

The most critical issue facing educators today
Low student achievement in middle and high schools are my greatest concern.

Ways to resolve this issue
I agree with State Superintendent, Jack O'Connell, in that we need to put funds and support into programs that are working, such as AVID, and the Performing Arts Program at Hamilton. These programs encourage teachers to focus in on a small group of students and offer them support with study skills, monitoring their grades, articulating problem areas with core teachers and parents. Teachers need to be adult mentors for the family of students they’re dealing with during that particular moment in time. It is these small, personal programs that make the difference in the big picture. Successful programs should be duplicated across the state.

One thought to inspire other teachers to succeed
There is nothing more gratifying than being a positive influence in somebody's life.

One lesson every student should learn
Treat people the way that you want to be treated.
