Barbara C. Johnson
Wisconsin Teacher of the Year
Irving Elementary School, West Allis, WI
Grades K-1, all subjects

My teaching philosophy
My philosophy is that all children can learn when provided with a safe and nurturing environment that strives to meet individual needs in all areas.

My philosophy in action
I recognize diversity and address specific needs through differentiation in instruction and the creation of specialized materials that can be utilized in a student-center format.

My greatest teaching accomplishment
Being selected as a mentor and leader in the kindergarten department guiding and challenging 33 teachers to pursue new ideas to reflect on their successes.

The most critical issue facing educators today
Meeting the needs of diverse populations to successfully educate the learners at all levels.

Ways to resolve this issue
Shared accountability and resources from the schools, society and the family must be made available to accommodate the diverse needs of all students.

One thought to inspire other teachers to succeed
Set high goals. Continually re-evaluate and reflect on your methods and you will be successful with each student.

One lesson every student should learn
Never give up, the pursuit of learning is lifelong.
