Kyann L. McMillie
Texas Primary Teacher of the Year
Canutillo Elementary School, Canutillo, TX
Grade 1, Languages

My teaching philosophy
Teaching is not filling the children's heads with knowledge but instead working cooperatively together as a community of learners.

My philosophy in action
I incorporate a constructivist process using hands-on learning, manipulatives, and learner-centered instruction.

My greatest teaching accomplishment
My greatest teaching accomplishment is working as a mentor teacher for new teachers and student interns.

The most critical issue facing educators today
The most critical issue that we as educators face today is preparing our students for global opportunities through language, knowledge, critical thinking and technology.

Ways to resolve this issue
This issue may be resolved by encouraging experienced teachers to continue their learning experiences through on-going professional development and also by encouraging high standards of learning for all students.

One thought to inspire other teachers to succeed
As educators we must always remember that our influence is far-reaching. Every child whose life we touch will go on to do good things with his or her life if we provide the best education that we possibly can give.

One lesson every student should learn
Every student should learn that every experience is a learning experience, whether it be good or bad.
