My teaching philosophy
My philosophy is a blend of traditionalism and progressivism. I am traditional
concerning course content, academic standards, and discipline. I am progressive
in regard to mentoring students and trying to run an interactive classroom.
My philosophy in action
My fifth period Advanced Placement Psychology class meets for twenty-five minutes,
followed by a twenty five minute lunch period and another twenty five minutes
of class. Class time might be spent on an interactive lecture or an old fashioned
multiple-choice test. But during the lunch break I remain in the room to play
chess and/or talk with students about their interests and future plans.
My greatest teaching accomplishment
I have taught in two so-called inner-city high schools for thirty-four years
and still retain enthusiasm for both teaching and mentoring students.
The most critical issues facing educators today
We must provide a high-level 21st century education for all students, not just
those with privileged backgrounds.
Ways to resolve this issue
We need to make sure high-level courses, such as Advanced Placement and International
Baccalaureate, are available in all schools. All schools need adequate supplies
and well-qualified teachers who are compensated properly.
One thought to inspire teachers to succeed
Remember that your impact is greater than you think.
One lesson every student should learn
Everyone should have short-term and long-term goals. Maximum effort is necessary
to achieve your dreams.
