My teaching philosophy
I believe that teaching isn't about teaching at all; it is about the learning
that takes place. The most outstanding and effective teachers are those that
never stop trying to learn new strategies and techniques for improving their
teaching and learning. Teaching is about learning how to reach each student
on his/her level with an activity that addresses his/her learning style. It
is about learning how to communicate with students, parents, administrators,
and members of the community. I believe teaching and learning must be fun. If
I am having fun, then it will show in my voice, body movements and facial expressions.
My enthusiasm is contagious.
My philosophy in action
We must PLAY everyday. My students are constantly motivated by my energy and
love for teaching. I engage them in multi-sensory activities that reach all
learning levels. We sing, dance, role-play, laugh, act out real life situations,
and play games on a daily basis. On special occasions, I wear skates all day
or dress up in a costume that reflects a story or theme.
My greatest teaching accomplishment
Through the contribution of my time, energy, and enthusiasm, I feel I have earned
the respect of my students, parents, and my colleagues. I have former students
that continue to keep in touch and allow me to be a part of their lives. Parents
have expressed their gratitude by nominating me for an Inspirational Teacher
Award and sending personal notes, gifts, and words of thanks and praise. The
educators I work with daily nominated me to be their Teacher of the Year. This
is the accomplishment I am most proud of.
The most critical issues facing educators today
Although there are many issues plaguing public education, I feel that the most
critical is the decline of parental involvement. Children need an educational
community and support system to be successful. Many of today's students have
two working parents or live in a single (working) parent home. It is difficult
for working parents to volunteer and attend functions that take place during
the school day. At home, quality time is shortened due to extra curricular activities
and adult job responsibilities. Parental involvement it vital to a child's success
and education.
Ways to resolve this issue
Today's economy demands that adults dedicate more time to work than to their
family in order to make ends meet. In order to accommodate parents, school systems
must have flexible hours for conferences, school functions, and volunteer work.
Cutting out laminated materials, web site updates, and stuffing envelopes are
contributing activities that do not require the adult to physically be at school.
One thought to inspire teachers to succeed
Always be a learner, especially in your classroom.
And ALWAYS HAVE FUN! REMEMBER: If you are bored and uninspired, the students
are too! Let your passion show!
One lesson every student should learn
Every student should learn how to show RESPECT for themselves, and all living
and non-living things.
