Gil Espejo
Alberta Teacher of the Year
St. Gabriel School, Fort McMurray, Alberta

Mr. Espejo is the principal of St. Gabriel School, where he incorporates technology into many facets of his job, such as delivering curriculum, ensuring a safe and secure school by way of a nine-screen security system, and enhancing the value of school assemblies through the use of connected ipods and iphotos. He has worked tirelessly for the advancement of technological improvements for the St. Gabriel School community.

Gil was an innovative user of technology as far back as the 1980’s when he built very basic computers to enhance student learning in his industrial arts classes. Over the years he kept abreast of the latest developments in technology becoming an invaluable resource to promote technology use in the school, to train staff, and to model best practices using technology to create a stimulating learning environment for students.

Mr. Espejo’s motto is “if it’s good for kids . . .” He has demonstrated, in numerous ways, the positive impact technology can have on students. Whether it is building a student’s self esteem by having them assist in repairing a computer or designing a school website where homework is posted to increase assignment completion, Gil ensures that the impact of technology on students is positive.
