2006 National Teacher of the Year ceremony at the White House
During a ceremony at the White House on April 26, 2006, President George W. Bush presented the 2006 National Teacher of the Year award to Kimberly Oliver from the state of Maryland. As of June 1, Kim will begin her full-time, 1-year term as the national education ambassador. Honored at the event were the three National Teacher of the Year finalists: Sam Bennett from Florida, Ron Poplau from Kansas and Susan Barnard from Washington state. Also recognized were the 2006 State Teachers of the Year from each of the 50 U.S. states, the District of Columbia, the Department of Defense Education Activity, the Northern Mariana Islands, Guam, American Samoa and the Virgin Islands. The honored teachers emerged from the Oval Office and joined family, friends, and education supporters on the south lawn of the White House. The teachers’ expressions said it all – they told stories of individuals who started off hoping to make a difference in the lives of a few students, but who have developed into leaders, role models and mentors in their communities. Perhaps for many, it was a moment of self-actualization – a moment when it became clear that what they’ve accomplished is far greater than any of them even dreamed. President Bush expressed gratitude and support for Kim Oliver and for each of the other honored teachers. “You dedicated your lives to the formation of young minds. You're giving our children the skills they need to succeed in life, and equally important, the courage and the drive to realize those dreams. Our nation is grateful for your hard work. We appreciate what you do, and we are honored you're here at the White House” remarked the President. “America is blessed to have teachers like Kim Oliver. We're blessed to have teachers like all those who are gathered here at the White House. We thank you for the love and devotion you've shown our children each day.”
