Pete MacKay
Alberta Teacher of the Year
Jasper Place High School, Edmonton, Alberta
Grades 10-12, Hypermedia Technology

My teaching philosophy
Technology can play an important role in a child's development, if its use is approached as that of a tool rather than as a curricular subject. Rather than attend a "computer class,” students could study language, social studies, science and math with the help of technology. Technology can create a means to embrace a new level of connectedness - it can create bonds between groups who would not normally work together or even know about each other.

My philosophy in action
My students learn not just how to use different software applications, but also how to function and communicate in a creative freelance environment. They start to realize that they, as individuals, are a business entity and begin the process of becoming a digital media artist by working with other groups who reside both in our school and in other schools. By learning about project management and the creative process, students are better prepared to meet the demands of the working world.

My greatest teaching accomplishment
The Teacher List - theteacherlist.ca - is a small effort that creates many opportunities to meet with other teachers from around the world.

The most critical issues facing educators today
One of the most critical issues I see is the negative impact of technology on staff, students and families (such as cyber-bullying) and how effectively these problems are addressed.

Ways to resolve this issue
I feel that school personnel can continue to see the benefits of positive uses of technology in the classroom. By encouraging, modeling and expecting good Internet and technology citizenship, the message will get through.

One thought to inspire teachers to suceed
Teaching is not a glory-filled profession but it is one of the most rewarding professions. Where else can one contribute to the successes of so many? Just because we don't see the immediate results of our work does not make it any less important than that of other professionals.

One lesson every student should learn
Don't let high school be the biggest thing to happen to you in life. Finishing high school is just a start - you've barely begun.
