My teaching philosophy
Kids today are learning in a different way than we did as kids. The technology
explosion has changed the way kids take in and process information. Teaching
must be interactive and "three-dimensional" for kids to internalize
the concepts being taught. Worksheets and textbooks can no longer be the classroom
norm.
My philosophy in action
My lessons include extensive use of technology, props, art, drama, music, and
movement. My classroom focuses on student-driven learning and not lecturing.
My kids are noisy, messy and out of their seats. My kids are learning!
My greatest teaching accomplishment
All of the dozens and dozens of nonreaders who get turned on to good literature.
I specialize in the reluctant boy readers. I find them compelling reading materials
that make them want to read! I even get them reading poetry. Now that is an
accomplishment.
The most critical issues facing educators today
The teacher shortage! I fear that the teaching profession faces a future that
is bleak as our most talented college graduates do not pick teaching as a career.
It just doesn't pay enough. Kids do not want to spend 4+ years in college to
make a barely middle class existence.
Ways to resolve this issue
For starters, the federal government can stop requiring teachers to pay income
taxes, like other countries do. The government can give tax breaks to companies
who set up grant opportunities for teachers. Local governments can raise taxes
or allocate more money for teacher salaries. I have been teaching in Maryland
for 12 years and make just under $45,000, with a master's degree. That's sad!
One thought to inspire teachers to succeed
Your ability to motivate change in your students is infinite! I have had students
from the most dire circumstances excel because I believed in their ability.
I have seen educational miracles happen! Kids with 3rd grade reading skills
have left my classroom reading at a 7th grade reading level! That's impossible,
but it has happened!
One lesson every student should learn
If Helen Keller could graduate from college without sight or hearing, what can
you accomplish?
