The Teaching Excellence Awards program honors outstanding educators
across North America. Through sponsorship of existing national, state,
provincial and educational agency award programs, the TEA program
supports teachers who have shown themselves to be leading ambassadors
for education in their communities. (note: the TEA program does not
administer a teacher nomination or selection process.)
TEA recipients are recognized through sponsorship of the following
programs:
| U.S.
State and National Teacher of the Year awards |
U.S. State Teacher of the Year (STOY) programs are independently administered
by state departments of education or education agencies. The
TEA program sponsors U.S. State Teacher of the Year programs
by donating educational technology products to recognized state
recipients. A TEA Technology
Classroom is presented to each State Teacher of the Year.
In some cases, multiple State Teachers of the Year are recognized
by state agencies and by the TEA program. The TEA program presents
State Teacher of the Year finalists with a technology award
for their classrooms as well.

Further information about nominating someone or applying for
a State Teacher of the Year award may be obtained from your
state education agency.
Each State Teacher of the Year is automatically nominated for
the National Teacher of the Year (NTOY) award, administered
by the Council of Chief State School Officers. The TEA program
provides national nominees with product training and various
professional development opportunities during events held in
conjunction with the National Teacher of the Year program.

Excellence in Teaching Awards |
The Excellence in Teaching Awards, administered by Alberta Education,
recognize outstanding Alberta teachers. As part of the awards,
three teachers are selected each year to receive a SMARTer Kids
Foundation Innovative Use of Technology Award. Recipients of
this award are presented a TEA
Technology Classroom. In addition, the Foundation awards
20 Excellence-in-Teaching award recipients with a technology
award for their classrooms.
The TEA program began sponsoring the Excellence in Teaching
Awards in 2003. Of the 23 award recipients selected that year,
one teacher was selected to receive a SMARTer Kids Foundation
Innovative Use of Technology Award. In 2004, the Foundation
expanded its sponsorship to include three recipients annually.
